Show Notes: Stubborn Weight Loss, Dementia, and Brain Health - Tackling the Hidden Issues

Sasha's Question on Stubborn Weight Loss:
We kick things off with Sasha, who’s been feeling frustrated with weight loss despite sticking to what she thought was a healthy diet.
Karen’s Response:

  • Women face unique challenges when it comes to weight loss, like hormonal fluctuations throughout life.

  • Dietary Tips:

    • Eat pastured-raised meats, poultry, eggs, and dairy to avoid added hormones and antibiotics.

    • Choose organic fruits and veggies to avoid endocrine-disrupting pesticides and herbicides.

    • Incorporate complex carbs, like black or brown rice and colorful veggies, with a focus on portion control.

    • Don’t skip healthy fats like olive oil, raw nuts, seeds, and animal fats, which can actually help with weight loss.

  • Movement: The importance of moving your body—get at least 2 hours of movement per day, broken up into smaller chunks throughout the day.

  • Use tools like a step counter or apps like MyFitnessPal to stay on track with your goals.

Ed's Question on Dementia and Food:
Next, we hear from Ed, who is worried about dementia running in his family and how diet might play a role.
Karen’s Response:

  • Dementia is a syndrome with many potential causes, Alzheimer’s being the most common.

  • How Food Affects Dementia:

    • Pesticides, herbicides, and glyphosate are all playing a hidden role in brain health. These chemicals can pass the blood-brain barrier and contribute to neurodegenerative conditions.

    • The Importance of Organic Food: Organic produce avoids the pesticide load, and we should also pay attention to how animals are raised. Pastured-raised meats are a better option to avoid toxins in animal proteins.

    • Glyphosate exposure can damage the brain by increasing oxidative stress, causing neuroinflammation, and promoting cognitive decline.

Type 3 Diabetes and Brain Health:
Moving forward, Karen explains the concept of Type 3 Diabetes, which affects the brain's ability to metabolize glucose and leads to cognitive decline.

  • What is Type 3 Diabetes?

    • It's insulin resistance in the brain that leads to decreased glucose uptake, ultimately impairing memory and cognition.

    • Diet Tips for Brain Health: A lower-carb diet can help improve insulin sensitivity in the brain, potentially reducing the risk of dementia.

    • Mediterranean and MIND diets—emphasizing whole, unprocessed foods—have been shown to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

The Importance of Brain-Protective Foods:

  • Focus on healthy fats, like olive oil, butter, and avocados.

  • Stay away from hydrogenated oils and seed oils, which can harm brain function.

  • B vitamins play a crucial role in brain health, and it’s important to feed your gut with nutrient-dense, organic foods to support your microbiome.
