sorry, I have to keep stopping and making comments because I might forget... I think I might be very different from quite a few people because I question everything I never go to a job and just do what I'm told to do if it's something is not right or there can be a better way to do it I will go to management or go to whoever it is that makes the decisions and say hey, we could be doing this this way and it would be a whole lot easier or we could change this process so my whole life and believe me it hasn't been easy especially when you're younger, but I question rules I question processes I question everything and to be honest it doesn't make things easy because people think you should just follow whatever they say well if there's a better way or it says more lies or you know what I'm saying it just I don't know. It's just I've always been this way- my whole life
talking about connecting with new people and everything last year was not a great year for hurricanes in Florida. It's not that we had a lot. It's just that they were enhanced. I'll just say and we did lose power for a whole. I don't know if it was seven days it's hard to remember, but there were lines, man and power companies here from Texas and all over because DeSantis brought in people from anywhere he could get them from and I got to speak with them and I got to go around to different neighbors and even though we're out on farmland and there's hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of acres around us, you wouldn't believe how many of these people are not prepared. I mean, I have a neighbor that doesn't even have a phone charger to charge her phone nothing for food nothing and she lives next-door. Nothing for light and I'm thinking how could people not be prepared? It's not that she doesn't have the money. I think people think it'll never happen to them, but what's happened too many times and she's actually in her 70s and was born in Florida so she knows but why do people not prepare? I don't get it but anyway I got to go around and some of the neighbors I didn't know and our neighbors or you know like acres away and got to say hey is everything OK? You prepared is there anything that you need you know maybe you have this and I have this and we can share you know if we needed to you know do you have a plan? Can we exchange phone numbers so that we can get in touch with each other in case you have an emergency? I'm a nurse you know and so I got the offer my services and meet some of the people because generations change and you may not meet the next generation yet so it was an opportunity to come together as a community even though it's not like your rural community it's just hundreds and hundreds of acres of land.
The other thing is the power company people that I was speaking with were telling us certain things about because they live near the border things that were going on things that I didn't know about that they've seen firsthand also more information that we were given by by our co-op electric company, you know on what was going on where it was going on I offered to give them sandwiches and beverages. Whatever they needed. They said that they were good but you know it gave me an opportunity to try to give back and they were very grateful very nice people and we actually had the power on a couple days earlier than we would have . So yeah, there's a lot of opportunity that comes from these situations and these events.
hey Karen, just pausing after you were speaking about the power outage of six days. For some reason, I was born a problem solver it doesn't mean that I don't have fear when things start to happen but it's the thing is that my mind automatically goes into survival mode and since I've lived now in Florida for 30 years, although I've only been out on the 10 acres for 10 years the first thing I did when I came out here was start preparing. I made sure I had a generator for my house. I made sure I had a back up if the generator didn't work I've built fire pits. I've got multiple ways of cooking. I have multiple ways of getting water or something will happen to one of the two wells . I have ways to preserve food, even though I stock a tremendous amount of food and freeze dried food because I'm a prepper so that's the thing about being a prep is you're prepared for emergencies you've got headlamps and flashlights and solar powered things or you could charge it with your generator, but remember if the generator doesn't work, you've got solar power and we have plenty of sun in Florida so I have everything that I could possibly need if there was a power outage for six months I could not just survive but live now my parents on the other hand have a huge generator cause I have a 4000 square-foot house and when the power goes out, it automatically comes on and they live like nothing is going on outside right we may have 60 mile an hour 70 mile an hour winds but the problem is when their generator goes out. They don't have a back up so I'm over there trying to take care of them with my back ups to my back ups to my back ups and that's the frustration that I get and may be a little bit of fear because they're elderly and they're both sick. The thing is I have everything I need for both families and so I've always been a critical thinker from as far back as I can remember and I really always try to be prepared, but I still have what if thinking I think we all do. It's just not like it used to be. but the what if thinking like you said can be changed right around into OK well what if that does happen what would I do and then you figure out what you would do and that's your answer but I do believe in back ups to back ups to back ups, because you never know when one system is gonna fail another and I know this podcast isn't about prepping, but we can prep emotionally as well.
i've always said when the shit hits the fan and the grid will be going down for a long extended periods of time. There will be multiple extended rolling power outages. We've already seen the last few years blaming it on the heat if it's not a storm or ice or hurricane or whatever and I always say you know you can have all the protection that you need you can have all the food, the water everything that you need to survive and even Thrive for six months whatever the problem is can you do it mentally and if you don't get your mind right you're gonna see people well I won't go into the details of what people will probably start doing besides rioting but we do have to prepare ourselves mentally no matter if we have everything we could possibly need to survive anything. I just wanted to stop and pause there and bring that up.
