Can Sugar Be Medicine For Your Gut?

What does my mum's hilarious cameo and specific sugar have in common? This week's podcast. This simple sugar is a game changer for your gut and some other practical tips. Listen or watch now.

What if the key to resetting your gut, clearing brain fog, lifting your mood, and finally feeling like yourself again… wasn’t found in a trendy diet, a complicated cleanse, or another over-the-counter supplement? What if it’s actually a simple sugar?

In this episode, I’m excited to finally share something that’s flown under the radar — a unique simple sugar that’s available only by prescription in the U.S., but here in Canada — where I’m recording, publishing, and proudly living — it’s accessible without a prescription. And that means I can finally talk about it, openly.

This episode was recored edited and published in Canada, The content of this podcast is for everyone except the USA because this simple sugar is by prescription only in the USA.

How to take Lacutlose

This isn’t hype. When taken the right way, this simple sugar goes after the root of constipation, inflammation, and even the mental health swings so many experience with poor gut health. Most people haven’t heard of it — and most doctors aren’t talking about it if they do know about it. Stay tuned because you’re going to want to save this episode.

Now legally I can not share with you how to take lactulose. So, please be sure to discuss this with your doctor. I can however, share the studies with you all.

Studies

Study: Effect of Lactulose on the Composition and Metabolic Activity of the Human Faecal Flora

Key Findings:

  • Administering 3 g/day of lactulose for 2 weeks significantly increased fecal bifidobacteria counts.

  • Reductions were observed in Bacteroidaceae and Clostridium perfringens populations.

  • Decreases in fecal concentrations of putrefactive byproducts such as skatol, indole, and phenols were noted.

  • Activities of fecal enzymes including β-glucuronidase, azoreductase, and nitroreductase decreased.

  • Mean fecal pH dropped from 7.0 to 6.4.

Study: A Human Volunteer Study to Determine the Prebiotic Effects of Lactulose Powder on Human Colonic Microbiota

Key Findings:

  • In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, participants received 20 g/day of lactulose.

  • Fecal bifidobacteria and lactobacilli populations increased by 3.0 and 1.9 log units, respectively.

  • Populations of Bacteroides, Clostridium, and coliforms decreased by 4.1, 2.3, and 1.8 log units, respectively.

  • Mean fecal pH decreased from 6.9 to 5.8.

These studies support the role of low-dose lactulose as a prebiotic, promoting beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli, while suppressing potentially harmful bacteria like Bacteroides and Clostridium species. The observed decrease in fecal pH and reduction in harmful metabolites further indicate improved gut health.

Lactulose, is a synthetic disaccharide traditionally used as a prescription treatment for constipation and hepatic encephalopathy, also shows compelling evidence as a low-dose prebiotic. When taken in small, consistent doses, lactulose selectively stimulates the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, Faecalibacterium, and Akkermansia, while suppressing harmful bacteria including Bacteroidaceae, Clostridium, and coliforms.

Clinical Findings:

1. 3 g/day (Terada et al., 1992)

  • ↑ Significant increase in bifidobacteria

  • ↓ Bacteroidaceae and clostridia

  • ↓ Fecal putrefactive byproducts (skatol, indole, phenols)

  • ↓ Enzymatic activities (β-glucuronidase, azoreductase, nitroreductase)

  • ↓ Mean fecal pH from 7.0 to 6.4

2. 5 g twice daily (Bouhnik et al., 2004)

  • ↑ Increase in fecal bifidobacteria

3. 10 g twice daily (Ballongue et al., 1997)

  • ↑ Bifidobacteria (+3.0 log units)

  • ↑ Lactobacilli (+1.9 log units)

  • ↓ Bacteroides (–4.1), Clostridium (–2.3), Coliforms (–1.8 log units)

  • ↓ Fecal pH from 6.9 to 5.8

Key Implications:

  • Lactulose shifts the microbial environment toward eubiosis (balance).

  • Reduces production of putrefactive metabolites.

  • Enhances conditions unfavorable to pathogens via lowered gut pH.

  • May support mood, immune function, and gut barrier integrity through microbial modulation.
