Studying American history in high school, I was inspired by the brave heroes of the civil rights movement. Now, in North Carolina, visiting historic sites feels like stepping back into that classroom. It's surreal to see firsthand the places I once only read about, like the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, and the actual Woolworth’s counter where four young man courageously ignited change in the South.
Influenced by Mohandas Gandhi’s nonviolent protest techniques four young men of colour Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical College staged the first sit-in at Woolworth's in Greensboro, February 1, 1960.
Enlisting the help of a local white businessman, Ralph Johns alerted the local media to cover the events on television. Nothing happened that day, but it was a pivotal day in history that sparked sit-ins movements rapidly spreading to college towns throughout the South and into the North forcing facilities across the South into integration. By the end of July 1960, when local college students were on summer vacation, the Greensboro Woolworth’s quietly integrated its lunch counter.
The Woolworth's in Greensboro now houses the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, which features a restored version of the lunch counter where the courageous Greensboro four sat. Checkout the Woolworth’s sit in counter and much more at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum

What 3.5 hrs of watching TV a day does to your brain
We are still hooked up at the RV repair and upgrade shop sucking water and electricity in good ol' North Carolina for what feels like a happy eternity. Hey, it gives me the opportunity to not only adventure but to live like a local. I've gotten to know the techs here pretty well. So, there I was, outside wrestling with my husband's satellite dish - you know, the infernal contraption that keeps him tethered to what I affectionately call the "idiot tube." Now, let me tell you, every time I deal with that thing, there's a whole lot of muttering under my breath, and let's just say, it's not exactly Shakespeare. It never seems to work right and deep down, it’s a trigger for anger because I can't stand the garbage that comes out of it.
Now, there's this one tech who's become something of a kindred spirit. As I was out there grappling with the satellite, he sauntered over looking mighty concerned - either that or he was just checking to see if I hadn't completely lost my marbles. See, I have a bone to pick with my husband's satellite obsession. I mean, I adore our nomadic lifestyle, wouldn't trade it for the world, but there are some things I'd happily toss into the nearest dumpster. And at the tippity-top of that list? You guessed it, the stupid satellite and its receiver, flung off the highest tower I can find!
So, there I am, venting to this tech about my disdain for the idiot box. Turns out, he's the yin to my yang when it comes to television. He's in his late 30s, never grew up with a TV, and still doesn't own one. Thinks they turn our brains to mush, keeps us stupid and under some sinister spell of control. Now, I'd never quite considered the whole mind-control angle, but you know what? The more we talked, the more I started to think he might just be onto something. I call it the idiot box for a reason, and it looks like it might just be dumbing us up!
I have talked about how sitting is the new smoking and that we need to get moving however, did you know that sitting for hours watching TV is associated with [🎧👇]
